VLOOKUP is a very powerful feature of MS Excel. Vlookup stands for Vertical lookup and it operates by searching a list for a value in the left most columns and returns corresponding values from an adjacent column. The formula below is the generic statement used for a VLOOKUP:
=VLOOKUP( value, table_array, index_number, [not_exact_match]) In this formula: value: this is the lookup value that Vlookup finds table_array: is a cell range that explains to Vlookup the boundaries of the table it is looking for index_number: this is the column index. and it is counted from left to right from the range defined in the table_array [not_exact_match]: the value entered here is often "False". this operates by identifying if you want an exact or approximate match
